In my first election, my opponent said I couldn’t win because I was a mom.
So I went door-to-door with my twin boys, and I won. By 30 points.

I went on to win statewide twice and became the first African American woman to serve as chief justice of North Carolina’s Supreme Court.
Now, I’m taking on my toughest race yet: North Carolina’s open U.S. Senate seat. [[link removed]]
Some have said that running to become the third African American woman ever to serve in the U.S. Senate — and the first African American senator from North Carolina — will be difficult to do.
But I’m no stranger to tough fights, and I don’t back down from a challenge.
If you’re ready to flip North Carolina and hold the Senate, can you split a $12 donation between our campaign and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand before our FEC deadline? There’s no doubt that we can win if we all work together and do our part. [[link removed]]
We’ve seen the same playbook and same type of candidates time and time again in North Carolina. It’s time for us to try something new.
The obstacles are real. History shows that there’s a consistent trend of underfunding for women and people of color who run for office.
But like my mother told me - with hard work and faith, we can do anything. Running for Senate required a big leap of faith — faith in myself and faith that enough good people like you would step up to support us.
No candidate can win a race like this on their own, so my hope is you’re up to answer the call at this important moment for our campaign.
If you can afford it, please make a $12 donation to our campaign and Kirsten Gillibrand before our official FEC deadline. Every donation matters because each one sends a message that you believe that we can win North Carolina, hold the Senate, and win real change for the people of this country. [[link removed]]
I’m grateful to everyone that’s taken this leap of faith with us. I believe we will accomplish incredible things together, and when we all do our part, we will win.
