Amazon founder Jeff Bezos became a major force in global conservation efforts on Monday when he pledged $1 billion toward protecting 30 percent of the world's land and water by 2030. The pledge shows that land and water protection efforts will be a major focus of Bezos's $10 billion Earth Fund, which he formed last year.
Bezos's announcement said that his 30x30 efforts would focus on “areas that are important for biodiversity and carbon stocks and will give emphasis to the central role of local communities and Indigenous peoples in conservation efforts.”
The announcement described the $1 billion as the first of a "three-part nature strategy,” with future commitments focusing on landscape restoration and food system transformation.
In the United States, President Biden made the 30x30 goal central to his America The Beautiful initiative, but nearly five months later, his administration has yet to start developing the national conservation atlas that will be necessary for tracking those conservation efforts.
