ANNOUNCEMENTS

Attend the Candidate Forum on September 25!

The Electoral Committee has received an endorsement petition for Los Angeles City Council Candidate and DSA-LA member Hugo Soto-Martinez. Running for Council District 13 in 2022, Soto-Martinez is seeking endorsement from our chapter, and this decision will be made by our chapter membership via a membership vote.

LA City Council Disrict 13 is unique among upcoming elections. The district has hundreds of dues paying DSA-LA members within its boundaries, almost twice as many as the next City Council seat to be contested. This is a race where our chapter could play a huge, visible role, if we so decide.

All DSA-LA members in good standing are invited to join the Electoral Politics committee in an open forum with the candidate on September 25th, from 3-4:30pm via Zoom. The forum will feature an open discussion and Q/A period with the candidate, a summary briefing of the race and district, and a recommendation from the ElPol Committee. The event will conclude with closed deliberation among our membership, after which balloting will begin on the endorsement question.

Join your comrades on September 25th at 3pm to decide on the first phase of our chapter’s electoral work. RSVP at DSA-LA Candidate Forum – DSA Los Angeles 1. For those unable to join the forum, a space for statements and questions to the candidate will be made available beforehand.

Friday, September 24 @ 5:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Join us for the Youth Climate Strike in Downtown Los Angeles on Friday, September 24th. We will be marching from Pershing Square and rallying at City Hall.

The IPCC report released last month demonstrated that we have even less time than we previously thought to address the climate crisis, making it even more urgent for Congress to pass the infrastructure bill and invest massive public funding to implement the Green New Deal for Public Schools.

Masks will be required. Wear DSA swag or red. We hope to see you all there

Palms + Culver City Neighborhood ‘Know your rights’ Canvass

Saturday, September 25 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm

DSA-LA’s Neighborhood Solidarity Program is a campaign to strengthen and grow socialist organization by uniting with our neighbors through tenant organizing, mutual aid work, and political study.

Let by local Palms + Culver City Neighborhood Organizers, this ‘Know your rights’ canvass is organized to build connections and solidarity with renters in Palms, to ensure they know their economic rights during the pandemic (including state-wide rent relief & more) and have the resources and support they need to claim their rights and connect these struggles to our fight for a Los Angeles the working class deserves.

New and long-time socialist organizers and community members in Palms/Culver City are welcome to join; this event kicks off with a training at the beginning to make sure comrades have all of the information and resources they need before knocking doors.

Workers on the Move: How We Organize

Image

Saturday, September 25 @ 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Landscape of the Labor Struggle

In recent years, we have seen increased worker militancy in the U.S. in the form of wildcat strikes, the formation of workplace organizing committees, and union certification elections across several different industries. However, the laws that govern the formation of unions in the workplace, the National Labor Relations Act, have been shaped over nearly a century to favor the bosses. Employers have very little to lose by violating workers’ rights, not to mention the various types of employer actions that are sanctioned by the law. For example, when an employer hires a union-busting attorney to conduct “captive audience” meetings, there is no reciprocal right for the union. Even when bosses pursue extra-legal methods of defeating a union drive, like refusing to negotiate at the bargaining table or creating the conditions that lead workers to believe that their efforts are futile, the law does little to disincentivize this behavior. The workers who launched an organizing drive at the Amazon warehouse in Bessemer, Alabama earlier this year faced off against the world’s largest corporation. There are several documented instances of the company engaging in actions that most outside observers clearly see as moves to poison the well. While there are signs that the NLRB will rule in favor of the union, it’s difficult to imagine the possibility of holding a fair election in which the workers are able to vote freely.

Overview of the Workshop and Panel

The Protecting the Right to Organize Act has the potential to completely transform the landscape of labor organizing in favor of workers. In April 2021, DSA prioritized a campaign to get the PRO Act passed. There is currently one Democratic hold out in the U.S Senate: Kyrsten Sinema. While DSA and labor unions continue to pressure Sinema to become a cosponsor, workers continue looking for ways of organizing in their workplaces and grabbing back some of the power stolen by employers even in the absence of reform. This event will feature a labor lawyer and activist with the National Lawyers Guild who will go over the types of actions that workers can take in the absence of a union, even with the most anti-union bosses. We will also hear from several workers who engaged in their own workplace struggles in their attempts to build power.

All workers have the right to engage in collective action and workers can begin building power before voting to join a union. Organizing and banding together is how we as workers are going to protect our rights.
