Friends - Have you ever had to ration medication, or go without necessary prescription drugs due to the cost? Have you ever been denied medical coverage by an insurance company, or been kicked off your health care entirely? Stories like these are all too common, here in Vermont and across the country. The American health care system is broken — that’s why Peter and our entire team are hoping to hear from you today: As you may know, Americans pay by far the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs. For decades now, due to the immense greed of the pharmaceutical industry and their lobbyists in Washington, the sickest and most vulnerable people in our society have been exploited and taken advantage of while corporate executives make billions in profit. It is an outrage that must end, which is why Peter has led the fight in the House to lower the cost of prescription drugs and make health care a human right for years. In the upcoming reconciliation bill currently working its way through Congress, Peter has fought tirelessly to include a provision that would allow Medicare to negotiate drug prices with the pharmaceutical companies. You read that correctly — as it stands, Medicare legally cannot negotiate prices with the pharmaceutical giants. This provision alone would pay for expanded access to health care for millions and lower drug prices not only for seniors in the Medicare program, but all Americans. There’s still a great deal of work to be done to make sure this provision gets included in the final bill, so we’re asking you directly: Thanks in advance for sharing with us if you can. We’ll collect the responses and get them to Peter over the next few days. All our best, Team Welch
