We're writing to share a brief update about how the opposition to the Danskammer fracked gas power plant expansion is going and to invite you to the Stop Danskammer Coalition’s virtual Autumn Update Tuesday, Sept. 21 at 7pm to learn about two new public hearings.
Background: In March the Coalition warned that owners of the Danskammer power plant on the Hudson River in the Town of Newburgh were making plans to replace the current facility—which operates only a few days a year—with a new gas plant that will run nearly all the time. This full-time fracked gas plant would increase local air pollution, harm public health, harm People of Color and low-income communities, and exacerbate the climate crisis. Dozens of communities along the Hudson River took steps to oppose the expansion of the Danskammer fracked gas plant, and many organizations, including Alliance for a Green Economy, joined the Stop Danskammer Coalition to fight against the plant.
We're so proud that in the following months so many of you opposed this plant’s expansion by speaking at the NYS Public Service Commission’s virtual hearings about the Article 10 siting process which governs the overall permits for the proposed plant’s construction and operation (March 31, 2021) and at the NYS Department of Conservation's virtual hearings to ask that the DEC deny the Title V Air Permit for the Danskammer plant (August 23 and 25).
In fact, so many people registered to speak at the PSC hearings in March that two additional hearings about the Article 10 siting process have been scheduled:
Tuesday September 28 at 5pm
and
Wednesday, September 29 at 1pm.
We urge everyone, even if you spoke at a previous hearing, to register and make a comment at one of the September hearings. The registration deadline is Monday, September 27.
Please refer to this easy script and guidance about registering and testifying at these hearings.
We strongly encourage you to share this email with your networks because it’s very important to keep up the pressure on the Public Service Commission. And we hope you will join us at the hearings either September 28 or September 29!
Remember: You don't need to be an expert to speak at the hearing -- this opportunity is open to everyone! All you need to do is say your name, where you’re from, and briefly state what you think about the Danskammer proposal. If you want to say more, you can, but it’s not required.
Thank you for actively participating in the transition to a green economy,
