Friends – Uprooted from their homes, Afghan families are arriving across the country faced with the challenge of rebuilding their lives. Let’s help make it a successful story.

Shanah Tovah

Friends,

On the holiday of Sukkot, Jewish people around the world build sukkot -- temporary huts -- as a reminder of the Israelites’ dwellings as they wandered in the desert after persecution and exodus from Egypt. A key part of Sukkot and a core Jewish value is welcoming in guests -- Ushpizin.

This year, welcoming strangers seems especially resonant.

Uprooted from their lives and homes, Afghan families continue to arrive in communities across the country. Each faced with the challenge of rebuilding their lives and providing a future of hope and opportunity for their children.

And around the world, violence and injustice continue to force an unprecedented number of people from their homes. Forcing them to live in refugee camps not so dissimilar from the rows of sukkot our people found refuge in so long ago.

This Sukkot -- if you feel able -- please consider splitting a contribution between J Street and our friends at the HIAS refugee resettlement agency.

Together, our communities are fighting to end cycles of violence and injustice, to promote compassionate, values-driven leadership, and to make every resettlement story a success story.

Drawing on the history and values of our people, HIAS does important work advocating for refugees and providing vital, direct resettlement support to refugee families across the country.

Your contribution will fuel their work toward a world in which refugees find welcome, safety and opportunity. It will help ensure the stories of those arriving on our shores today are stories of success and compassion in generations to come.

Your contribution to J Street will fuel our work toward supporting values-driven American leadership -- leadership that seeks to end the cycles of violence and injustice in many parts of the world, and that could showcase to the world a generous and successful model of refugee support.

It will support our work to make clear to our political leaders that our community is driven by our shared values of justice, democracy, compassion and peace -- and stands against those who promote xenophobia and endless conflict.

Thank you, sincerely, for your support. Wishing a joyous and meaningful holiday to all those who are celebrating.

J Street is the political home for pro-Israel, pro-peace Americans who want Israel to be secure, democratic and the national home of the Jewish people. Working in American politics and the Jewish community, we advocate policies that advance shared US and Israeli interests as well as Jewish and democratic values, leading to a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
