This week, we're exposing shady fundraising tactics
Team —
Check it out: Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Sen. Josh Hawley each reported raising millions of dollars from grassroots donors in the first quarter of 2021. But where does that money go?
ProPublica decided to find out. Take a look at this:
“...new financial disclosures show that Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., relied on an email marketing vendor that takes as much as 80 cents on the dollar. That means their headline-grabbing numbers were more the product of expensively soliciting hardcore Republicans than an organic groundswell of far-reaching support.”
Said differently: There wasn’t a “groundswell of far-reaching support” for these two officials. They simply borrowed someone else’s email list and begged for money.
Look, the good news is… they aren’t amassing the level of support they let on. They over-inflated the interest in their campaigns, then appeared to use false numbers to solicit even more donations. That's not grassroots — that's astroturf.
When we share fundraising goals and numbers, they are real. We don’t have the biggest fundraising operation in the world, and we’re ok with that. Our job is to support our Members and the pragmatic Democrats we’ve backed to flip seats blue.
We won’t lie to you to string you along, and we hope that’s why you’re still with us.
More to come… we’ve got more shady practices to spotlight later this week.
