MISSILE DEFENSE MONDAYS September 13 - September 20, 2021 THE WEEK IN BRIEF On Monday, North Korea’s official state news agency stated that over the weekend, the military had successfully test launched new long-range cruise missiles that hit targets at over 900 miles away. These tests were the first to come out of North Korea in six months. On Wednesday, Politico reported that talks between Ukraine and the U.S. about buying an Iron Dome System might be in the works. A congressional staffer for the House Armed Services Committee said that officials from both countries agree that more solutions for integrated air and missile defense must be found for Ukraine’s security. Also on Wednesday, North Korea’s Railway Mobile Missile Regiment test fired two short-range ballistic missiles from a train. The test is the first of its kind in North Korea. On Friday, the Army released a statement regarding the 100th Missile Defense Brigade’s assistance in the Missile Defense Agency’s successful test of a ground-based interceptor that occurred on September 12th. The brigade provided the necessary human-in-the-loop to execute the test. Also on Friday, the U.S. Aegis Ashore Missile Defense System Romania changed command from Commander Michael S. Dawn to Commander Frederick G. Hettling. The system is one of the pieces of defense architecture that supports and defends NATO allies and U.S. deployed forces in Europe.
