Dear John,

UNHCR keeps helping the most vulnerable, even during the worst crises. That’s what it means to stay and deliver. And it’s exactly what we’re doing here in Afghanistan:

  • In the last few days, a convoy of trucks from Pakistan delivered thousands of tents and other much-needed supplies to our warehouse in Kabul.
    Watch more here.
  • The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, met with the interim Afghan government and our humanitarian staff on the ground in Afghanistan to help make sure that lifesaving assistance will continue to reach displaced families.

  • The violence, upheaval and tragedy of the last several months took the world by surprise. The news was filled with heartbreak and shock. But here in Afghanistan, our work never stopped.

Your caring support is helping our team to keep going.

Afghans have been suffering for more than 40 years – the current crisis adds to the already desperate humanitarian situation.

More than half of the population lives on less than one dollar a day. Over 3.5 million people are displaced by conflict within Afghanistan, including more than 600,000 people this year alone.

Even in this challenging situation, UNHCR has already helped more than 330,000 vulnerable Afghans with urgent relief items and other lifesaving aid since the start of 2021. But the needs continue to grow: many displaced people are living rough, in the open, and urgently need shelter and heating to stay safe and warm during the coming winter.

We have to support those in need. We are especially concerned about the plight of women and children. Afghans are people like you and me. They want peace. They want health care. They want their children to go to school. They want to live in safety and security.

Together, let’s ensure that we keep the people of Afghanistan on the forefront.

Kind Regards,

Caroline Van Buren
UNHCR Representative in Afghanistan
