John,
We urgently need you to take action to tell your U.S. representative and senators to support President Biden’s $3.5 trillion Build Back Better Act, which could be voted on in the House as early as this Friday.
Here’s a look at what’s been approved by House committees, and what is far from guaranteed.
Currently in the Build Back Better Act:
-
Make healthcare, eldercare, childcare, and housing more affordable;
-
Expand Medicare to cover hearing, dental, and vision;
-
Provide universal pre-K for 3- and 4-year olds, and free community college;
-
Create comprehensive paid family and medical leave;
-
Help create a clean energy economy;
-
Extend the Child Tax Credit, which has the potential to cut child poverty in half.
But with Big Pharma, Big Tech, Big Oil, and the Chamber of Commerce attempting to gut the 10-year $3.5 trillion package, many of the priorities above are far from guaranteed. Right now, there are not enough votes secured in the House or Senate to give Medicare authority to negotiate for lower prescription drug prices or to raise the full $3.5 trillion in revenue by making the rich and corporations pay their fair share.
With a vote expected as early as this Friday, can you send a message to your representative and senators right now demanding they fight for the full $3.5 trillion Build Back Better Act, and to pay for it by making the rich and corporations pay their fair share?
The House Ways and Means Committee has approved just $2.1 trillion in new revenue to be paid by the rich and corporations. While this is a good start, it’s still well short of the $3.5 trillion proposed by President Biden.
In order to fully fund the 10-year budget, it’s critical that billionaires and other ultra-wealthy Americans pay more in taxes. That means closing the Billionaires Loophole―also known as the stepped-up basis loophole―that allows a lifetime of capital gains to go forever untaxed.
That means closing loopholes that allow profitable multinational corporations to dodge tens of billions of dollars in U.S. taxes each year by shifting profits to offshore tax havens.
And, that means cracking down on rich tax cheats and corporations that get off scot-free as they illegally evade hundreds of billions of dollars in taxes each year.
Click here to write to your members of Congress today and demand they fight for the full $3.5 trillion Build Back Better Act and to pay for it by making the rich and corporations pay their fair share.
We have an opportunity before us to address long-standing racial, social and economic inequities, create millions of good-paying jobs and build an economy that works for all of us. Let’s make sure Congress hears us and acts decisively to invest in our future.
Thank you,
Sarah Christopherson
