SENATE PARLIAMENTARIAN DEALS BLOW TO AMNESTY, BUT IT IS NOT KNOCKED OUT YET

MORE GRASSROOTS ACTION NEEDED TO END THE THREAT.

Last night, Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough issued the blockbuster statement that the giant proposed amnesty violates the rules governing a special Senate process called "budget reconciliation."

It was a great first step, but don't be lulled into thinking the massive amnesty threat is over.

GO TO YOUR CUSTOMIZED ACTION BOARD here to send messages to your three Members of Congress that they most need to receive to help deliver a knock-out blow to this dangerous amnesty proposal.

To be sure, the parliamentarian's statement last night has put the amnesty for an estimated 8 million illegal aliens on the ropes. This is a wonderful cause for initial celebration. About turning illegal aliens into LPRs (Legal Permanent Residents) in a $3.5-trillion budget reconciliation bill, MacDonough wrote this:

"Changing the law to clear the way to LPR status is tremendous and enduring policy change that dwarfs its budgetary impact."

That was the key rationale for why MacDonough said it would violate Senate rules to include an amnesty in a budget reconciliation bill. (Read our news story HERE.)

SENATE DEMOCRATS STILL CAN OVERRIDE PARLIAMENTARIAN TO INCLUDE AMNESTY

The country and American workers are not safe yet.

The 50 Senate Democrats and Vice President Harris could vote to change a decades-long Senate rule about budget reconciliation bills. That would allow them to vote to over-rule Parliamentarian MacDonough's objection to including the amnesty.

This is not at all out of the question. Voting to toss out long-standing Senate traditions and rules has recently been done by both parties. When Democrats were previously in power, they made it possible for a single party with a narrow majority to confirm lower-court federal judges for lifetime appointments without any bi-partisan support. When Republicans gained power, they did the same for confirming Supreme Court justices.

Our job as activists right now, is to show Members of Congress how incredibly unpopular a massive amnesty would be at this time of low work force participation rates among Americans and high surges of foreign workers across our southern border.

We need at least one Democratic Senator to refuse to go along with changing Senate rules.

Even better, we need many Democratic Senators to realize amnesty at this time is too politically radioactive, and for them to persuade their Party leaders to leave the Senate rules alone and leave the amnesty down for the count.

That is where your activism on your customized ACTION BOARD is critical right now.

SENATE MAJORITY LEADER SCHUMER SAYS HE'S NOT GIVING UP ON AMNESTY

We have difficulty understanding how an amnesty could be rewritten to overcome the parliamentarian's objections. But Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) immediately reacted that he will try:

"We are deeply disappointed in this decision but the fight to provide lawful status for immigrants in budget reconciliation continues. Senate Democrats have prepared alternate proposals and will be holding additional meetings with the Senate parliamentarian in the coming days."

That is another reason why we need you to go to your customized ACTION BOARD and especially keep the pressure on Democratic Senators to persuade Sen. Schumer to let go of his amnesty dream.

And Members of the House of Representatives also need to hear from you, particularly if you are represented by a Democrat.

Disappointingly, not a single Democrat in Congress has spoken against ramming through lifetime work permits and a path to citizenship for 8 million illegal aliens without even a real debate. Nonetheless, we are certain that quite a few Democrats are uncomfortable with the proposal and maybe even personally opposed. They have been under great pressure and even intimidation from Party leadership to keep their concerns to themselves. By keeping the fires of opposition hot in their Districts, it is possible that those "amnesty-uncomfortable" Democrats might at least privately ask House Speaker Pelosi to let the amnesty die a quiet death.

Before you go to your ACTION BOARD, let me speak for all of us at NumbersUSA in thanking all of you who have been taking actions for weeks to make it less likely that Democrats will want to continue their fight for this amnesty. It isn't just the Democrats. Your actions with Republican Senators continue to be important, too, even though none has supported this particular amnesty. A number of them have long been interested in passing amnesties with only a minor amount of extra enforcement. It has been good for them to get so many opposition messages during this fight.

Let's keep the fires of opposition burning!
