Hi, Over 80 people are reported dead in the wake of Hurricane Ida. Several more storm systems are brewing in the Gulf of Mexico. And other storms are causing historic flooding up and down the east coast. With the human toll of climate change mounting before our eyes, Joe Manchin is calling for a pause on climate action. Perhaps because he's made millions of dollars in profit from his own fossil fuel investments?1 It's clearer than ever that the reconciliation budget deal — perhaps the best opportunity to enact climate legislation for the next decade — must go big on climate. Yet Manchin has suggested he won't vote for it. Other conservative Democrats, key swing votes on the legislation, may follow suit. Pause on funding basic human services and addressing the climate crisis? In Rep. Pramila Jayapal’s words: "Absolutely not."2 Sign the petition: Tell President Joe Biden and Congress to go big on climate action! Manchin has balked at the $3.5 trillion price tag, citing false claims about runaway inflation. But experts agree that the economy isn't overheating. The climate is.3 And other crises, exacerbated by the pandemic, are boiling over, too. Addressing the climate crisis — and funding other unaddressed crises in child care, paid leave, education, health care, and affordable housing — means the overall budget package must stay at or above the current $3.5 trillion. Congress and President Biden are entering final discussions and a vote is expected later this month. Now is the time to show your Representative and Senators you want bold climate action. Together, we can make sure they hear more from constituents like you than corporate donors or right-wing colleagues.
