John,

Gov. Abbott and his Republican allies know there is more than one way to attack democracy.

Today, lawmakers return to the Capitol in Austin, at the direction of the governor, for a third special legislative session. Leading the agenda is the once-in-a-decade process of redrawing district maps for the state legislature, the State Board of Education and Congress.

Historically, maps drawn by this legislature have been wildly unfair, and they will be again this time if we let them. We can't let Gov. Abbott and state Republicans further silence the communities that make Texas diverse.

That's not all that is on the agenda.

The governor has already asked lawmakers to again bully transgender kids with legislation that would bar them from participating in sports. And since it is entirely up to the governor to decide what topics can be considered during a special session, extreme legislation on just about anything could be coming our way whenever Gov. Abbott feels like it.

The right’s assaults on our values have been relentless. With your continued support and activism, you will keep TFN on the front lines against these attacks on our democratic institutions. Help Us Defend Democracy

Lawmakers already passed a voter suppression bill that will make it harder to vote. We can't let them draw district lines in a way that favors one party over another. That would be yet another blow to democracy.

We need fair maps. The attacks on transgender children need to stop. And Gov. Abbott needs to stop catering to a far-right base and instead promote an agenda that helps, not hurts, Texans.

In the fight,

Carisa Lopez
TFN Political Director
