Dear John
Today marks the release of the UK Trade and Business
Commission’s interim
report. As secretariat of the Commission, Best for Britain
provides research, administrative and logistical support to this
inclusive cross-party initiative.
The Commission is made up of MPs from all parties and
representatives and experts from the worlds of business, trade and
economics.
This landmark new report, based on six months of evidence
gathering, highlights the difficulties faced by different sectors in
the wake of Brexit, and also showcases personal testimonies to
illustrate the impact Brexit is having on the
ground.
It is clear from the evidence the Commission has heard that Brexit
has seriously affected the UK’s trade in food - from concerns about
food standards to worries about the costly effect of paperwork
associated with post-Brexit trade. As supermarket shelves stand empty,
and fears of price rises grow, we need to acknowledge that bad
trade is propelling food poverty.
That’s why we’re asking our supporters to write to their MP as part
of our Food Poverty is not a Fair Trade campaign.
We want the Government to implement
the report’s recommendations, many of which present a practical
solution to spiralling food costs. We’re also calling on the
Government to reverse the cut to the £20 uplift to Universal Credit,
which will simply put further strain on many hard-working
families.
Make a start and be part of the solution - write to
your MP today.
