TEXAS TRIBUNE: Gov. Greg Abbott calls special legislative session for redistricting starting Sept. 20
FIGHT BACK: [link removed]

John --

Tomorrow, the Texas legislature will convene to begin redrawing our legislative districts. Let me be clear: The Texas GOP could use this once-in-a-decade opportunity to draw fair maps that reflect the diversity of our state but unfortunately, they’ve made clear that’s not what they intend to do.

Republicans have already admitted that gerrymandering is their plan to take back the House majority. Former Texas GOP Chairman Allen West was blunt, saying “Texas Republicans control this process and must realize this strategic opportunity, and not concern themselves with ‘fairness’...”

John in the past decade, 95 percent of Texas’ population growth came from people of color in communities like those here in TX-32. A fair redistricting plan would reflect this growth, but make no mistake: Republicans don’t intend on a fair, nonpartisan process.

As a former voting rights attorney, I know how harmful partisan gerrymandering is to our democracy. While Republicans attack free and fair elections, Democrats are working to protect our democracy.

In Congress, we’re advancing legislation that will help stop these egregious attacks on voting rights, not only in Texas but across the country. We must make it easy to register to vote, allow Americans to vote by mail, early or on Election Day without interference, and make sure those votes aren’t diluted by partisan gerrymandering.

John, I can’t do this alone. I’m counting on this grassroots team to step up and join me in the fight to protect our democracy. House Republicans are just 5 seats away from the majority, and with National Republicans targeting 5 vulnerable Democratic seats right here in Texas, keeping our Democratic Majority could come down to my race.

With my September FEC deadline coming up quickly, it’s essential that we pick up the pace so we have the resources we need to win. So, I’m asking, John: Can you help us by adding a donation ASAP?
