Dear John,
I’m delighted to be able to write to you today as the new
chair of Best for Britain.
Four decades as a diplomat has taken me across the world,
representing our country in Washington as the U.K. ambassador to the
United States, and as the UK Permanent Representative to the EU -
working for both Labour and Conservative Prime Ministers. So
it feels natural to have ended up at the helm of a proudly
non-partisan, internationalist campaign group like Best for
Britain.
I am looking forward to using my experience to help Best for
Britain guide the UK towards a more open and internationalist
future.
This is an exciting time. Best for Britain has completed its
transition from temporary pressure group to a permanent organisation
campaigning for internationalist values in British politics.
However, I know that these times can often seem more daunting than
exciting, especially for those of us who want to see the UK working
with the world not pulling up the drawbridge. I want us to
return to being an open, confident nation with allies around the
world, which sets an example for others to follow.
Proposing forward-thinking solutions to global problems and
ensuring the UK leads by example in the world is work that means a
great deal to me - and I know that it means a lot to you too. As we
take on these challenges, I must say a huge thank you. Your
support and belief in Best for Britain is what has allowed us to
flourish and cement our place in British politics. Best for
Britain’s work building stronger relationships abroad and
strengthening democracy at home, will continue apace.
I have real faith that civil society can guide the future for good
- and I’m so pleased to be a part of your movement for progress,
inclusion, openness and political integrity.
Best wishes,
Lord Kim Darroch Chair, Best for
Britain
