PFAW Member, Maybe you saw Terry McAuliffe’s email this morning on behalf of PFAW’s work in the upcoming Virginia elections. Well, we wanted to flag one more recent item to help drive Governor McAuliffe’s points home… PFAW’s Right Wing Watch just reported on a story that Republican candidate for Virginia House of Delegates Bill Drennan – in a truly bizarre and nonsensical comparison – asserted in a candidate forum that women who get abortions are responsible for more deaths than gun violence, and raised a hypothetical scenario in which women seeking abortions be made to wear “ankle bracelets” as a “common-sense restriction.” As Right Wing Watch points out, “By ‘ankle bracelets,’ we’re assuming he means the law-enforcement kind used to track people accused or convicted of crimes, and not the Kay Jewelers kind.” Drennan’s Democratic opponent for this open seat, Suhas Subramanyam, is a strong progressive champion who is endorsed by People For the American Way. And we can tell you, based on many of the 40 Virginia races in which we’ve endorsed progressive candidates, that this dynamic – a great progressive Democrat running against an extremist Radical Right Republican – is not unique. Drennan is AGAINST gun reform, AGAINST the Equal Rights Amendment, and recently labeled himself a “climate change skeptic,” saying climate change is “not based on science.” Meanwhile, Suhas Subramanyam, who served in the Obama White House, is running to fight for health care, civil rights, the environment, criminal justice reform, and equality for all. This is the kind of race that is happening all over the state and it illustrates in stark terms what’s at stake in the elections happening less than two weeks from today. We need your help desperately to defeat extreme right-wingers like Bill Drennan and elect progressive legislative majorities comprised of exciting young leaders like Suhas. Thank you for everything you do! -- PFAW’s Elections Team
