Since before I even began serving in the US Senate, my friend and colleague, Rep. Barbara Lee, has exemplified how to hold true to one’s principles.

In 2001, Barbara was the only member of Congress to vote against giving the executive branch a blank check to go to war in Afghanistan — a check that multiple administrations have used to go to war in nearly a dozen more countries since that original, fateful vote.

It was a vote that prompted her to receive death threats and criticism from all sides but in the face of it all, she stuck to her convictions, and put her values first. Now after decades of endless wars, many of those original detractors are praising her foresight and political courage.

Barbara is unafraid to take the unpopular position to do what is right — that’s what makes her such an exemplary and inspirational public servant, and why it is so important that we continue to stand with her in the face of even more cynical, politically-motivated attacks.
