Alabama’s corrections system is overcrowded and antiquated. It’s been a humanitarian crisis for decades. And later this month, it will be the subject of a special session of the Legislature.

During this session, legislators will consider a plan to build and renovate multiple prisons across Alabama. But our state can’t simply build its way out of this problem. We need your help to convince lawmakers to pass needed criminal justice reforms during the upcoming special session.

Click here to ask Gov. Kay Ivey to call for criminal justice reforms during the special session and to urge your state House and Senate members to support them.

Meaningful sentencing reforms to reduce overcrowding should accompany any plan for new prisons in Alabama. Repeal of the state’s outdated Habitual Felony Offender Act would be one long-term step in the right direction. Parole reforms and stronger investments in community corrections and reentry supports would help as well.

To bring lasting change to Alabama’s corrections system, lawmakers need to approve these and other reforms. And by including these reforms in her call for the special session, Gov. Ivey can make it much more likely that they will pass.

The governor could call the special session any day now. That means the time to speak out for justice and lasting change in Alabama is NOW. Click here to tell Ivey and your legislators to pass meaningful criminal justice reforms during the upcoming special session.
