Fossil fuel companies are suing governments for more than $18bn (£13bn) in corporate courts over climate policies, our latest investigation shows.
These are corporations that have caused the climate crisis. They should be paying to fix it, not demanding a payout.
This investigation has really hit a nerve. It made the headlines on Sky News and we’ve seen hundreds of people already sharing it - including MPs from at least four political parties. It outrages people so strongly when they learn about fossil fuel companies using corporate courts. It’s a broken system and it’s clear for all to see.

Reparations for climate action
In the face of the threat to the entire planet, the floods, the wildfires, the livelihoods and homes already destroyed - the brunt of which has been in the global south - and the threat of the climate chaos to come, it is almost unbelievable that these fossil fuel companies think they are the ones that deserve more money.
Knowing big polluters want $18bn, is even worse when you compare it with the amounts going into climate finance. It’s almost a quarter of the official figures for the amount rich countries are giving to the global south to help countries respond to the climate crisis. And actually, according to some estimates, rich countries are only giving $19-22bn. So these companies want almost as much for themselves as is going to the whole developing world in climate funding.
Notoriously, when laws were passed against the slave trade in Britain, it was slaveowners who were compensated, not the people who had been enslaved. Today fossil fuel companies are effectively asking for something similar – reparations for climate action.
Day of action
I know that across the country many of you may be taking action today, and I wanted to share with you a couple of photos from actions that many of us here in the office took part in:
