John,

It's been over a month since the census data needed for redistricting was released and I'm writing with a strategy update. This is going to be a long email, so if you don't have time to read it but would like to support the NDRC during this most critical phase of our work, you can make a quick donation right here.

We told you that things would start moving very quickly in September, and they have! States like Ohio have already passed gerrymandered legislative maps, and other states aren't far behind. As we expected, we're seeing numerous attempts by Republicans to keep the public out of the redistricting process so they can manipulate the maps behind closed doors. But we're making it very difficult for them. With our affiliate All On The Line, we've been mobilizing people all over the country to demand transparency and fairness in redistricting.

In Ohio, one set of GOP draft state legislative maps were so distorted that a local political science professor called them "almost the definition of gerrymandering." The ones that passed were even worse. Those maps would give Republicans -- who have only won 54% of the vote in recent elections -- control of 72% of Senate and 68% of House seats, a supermajority! And they think they can get away with this, which is why it's urgent that we have the resources to fight back. Can you pitch in to help?

Ohio is just the first. States that are gaining seats in the House of Representatives, like Texas and North Carolina, will be releasing proposed maps shortly. We know their plan is to gerrymander for political gain because they've told us so -- repeatedly. So over the past few months we've been refining our multi-pronged plan:

  • engaging the American people to demand transparency and secure truly representative maps

  • having our experts analyze proposed maps so we know whether they're fair or rigged

  • where necessary, supporting plaintiffs in lawsuits to protect states’ redistricting processes from manipulation

  • and making sure Republicans know they will be held accountable for their actions during redistricting in the 2022 elections.

But keep in mind that with so many states to work in, we're going to need a lot of resources to do it all. That's why I have to ask you one more time: Can you rush a donation of any amount to help us fight for fairness in states across the country?

Thank you,
Kelly
