Hey team -- I was in the room Wednesday night when the Republican-controlled commission voted along party lines to adopt Ohio’s new state legislative maps. Our team is still analyzing the details of the map, but one thing is clear: this map is gerrymandered -- even more so than our current maps.

Before casting her vote, House Minority Leader Emilia Sykes -- a Black woman and the only woman on this seven-person commission -- explained why she would not support the gerrymandered map.

Leader Sykes said: “To have a map that eliminates the ability for women like me to engage in a process and to not have their voices heard is not only offensive, it is plain wrong.”

She went on to say that this redistricting process is about the human right to access and participate in the democratic process. The team at All On The Line is fighting every day to stop map manipulators from denying communities fair access to engage in our democracy.

If you haven’t had a chance to read about what went down Wednesday night in Ohio, take a look at the email below. And if you’re feeling inspired to make a donation to support this movement, here’s a link to make a contribution: actblue.com/donate/aotl-makeadonation [[link removed]]

Late last night -- after missing deadlines and ignoring reforms passed by Ohio voters -- the state’s Republican-controlled redistricting commission voted along party lines to adopt a gerrymandered state legislative map.

In the moments before the vote, even Republican Governor DeWine publicly questioned the constitutionality of this map. But he -- and the four other Republicans -- voted for it anyway. =

Republicans aren’t sticking to just manipulating maps behind closed doors -- they think there will be no consequences or accountability when they adopt gerrymandered maps out in the open -- albeit, in the middle of the night.

We need to prove them wrong.

There are two opportunities for accountability in Ohio. First -- while the state legislative map was finally adopted, map drawers still have not started setting up the congressional map-drawing process. The AOTL movement in Ohio still has a chance to impact this map and make sure the districts -- and the people elected to represent Ohioans in Congress -- actually reflect their communities.

Second -- the U.S. Senate just introduced the Freedom to Vote Act, the latest democracy reform legislation that would ban the kind of blatant partisan gerrymandering currently plaguing Ohio. We are about to dial up our advocacy efforts to help people across the country contact their senators and demand support for this bill.

Ohio is our first big battle in the fight for fair maps, but it won’t be the last. In fact, we are already planning five-figure advocacy and accountability campaigns in multiple target states right now. But we need your help.

Will you donate $5 -- one dollar for each of the Republicans on the Ohio Redistricting Commission who voted to adopt the gerrymandered map -- to All On The Line today? Or if you’re really fired up and ready to donate, you can donate ten dollars for each map manipulator. '
