Three Stories You Should Know About
1. IT'S BISEXUAL AWARENESS WEEK!
How are you celebrating bisexual leaders during Bisexual Awareness Week? Consider learning more and helping elect more bisexual, pansexual and queer leaders!
According to LGBTQ Victory Institute’s 2021 Out for America report, bisexual elected officials make up only 7.1% of all currently-serving elected officials, while pansexual and queer elected officials make up 1.42% and 7.61%, respectively. While that’s a 37% increase from last year’s report, we still have a long way to go before bisexual people achieve parity among out elected officials.
And with parity comes greater acceptance. While bisexual people still face ostracization inside and outside the LGBTQ community (read up on the biphobic attacks on current candidate Christy Holstege’s campaign last year), the number of young people who identity as bisexual has been rising over the last several years.
2. BIG VICTORIES ON SEPTEMBER SUPER TUESDAY
We saw excellent results from our September Super Tuesday races this week!
Becca Miller, our candidate for the Somerville (MA) City Council, Ward 7, took second place in her primary. Becca and the top vote getter, who received only 32 more votes than Becca, will both advance to the November ballot.
Rebecca Maurer, running for Cleveland City Council, Ward 12, placed second in her primary with 42% of the vote. Rebecca’s opponent was the only "no" vote on a 2019 piece of legislation that Rebecca championed to protect Cleveland's children from lead poisoning. Notably, Cleveland’s lead poisoning rates are three times higher than Flint, Michigan's – and Rebecca is fighting to right this wrong.
In Boston, incumbent candidate Liz Breadon won her City Council primary with over 71% of the vote, all but ensuring another victory in November.
Victory Fund-endorsed incumbent candidate Kerry McCormack won his primary for the Cleveland City Council, Ward 3, with over 74% of the vote!
3. HISTORY-MAKING PRIMARY NEXT TUESDAY
Our next set of primaries will take place on September 21 – including Keanuú Smith-Brown’s primary for the Annapolis City Council. When he wins, Keanuú will make history as the first out LGBTQ elected official in the city!
