Friend,
If we’re going to make sure
democracy endures, we have to make sure that democracy delivers. The
opponents of self-government — the people who would rather take power
than accept compromise — rely on the dysfunction of our government to
advance their extreme agenda. The answer is for us, as a movement, to
insist on a government that can solve real problems, and deliver real
solutions for America.
That’s precisely what Renewer,
former Governor Christine Todd Whitman, did this week. Working with
RAM, she sent a formal letter to all 50 Senate
Republicans asking them to
end politically motivated holds on nominees to fill key government
roles. By some estimates nearly 85% of our most fundamental government
appointee positions are currently vacant, and many of those vacancies
have a nominee just waiting to get a fair Senate hearing.
How can our government help small
businesses through economic turmoil, or navigate a public health
crisis when key leaders and advisors aren’t in position to do their
jobs? We aren’t asking Republicans to vote for every appointee, simply
to stop needlessly delaying the votes on these nominees. We can’t let
partisan politics break our ability to govern.
It’s time to restore sanity and
stability to our government, and that starts by getting our elected
leaders to put good governance above petty politics. That’s what it
means to be a renewer, and that’s what we will always fight
for.
