I have a voting rights update to share with you -- recently, Republican lawmakers in Texas passed a major voter suppression bill, making the biggest rollbacks to voting rights in decades.
The bill in Texas is just one of hundreds like it nationwide. Ever since Donald Trump falsely claimed that the 2020 election was rigged against him, state lawmakers have ramped up their efforts to suppress Americans’ fundamental right to vote. Now, 18 states have enacted 30 laws that make it harder to vote.
As not only a member of Congress but also a former combat veteran, I take my responsibility to protect and defend our democracy very seriously. Every American’s voice should be heard at the ballot box.
I took action in Congress and voted for the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, which would restore crucial voting protections and help prevent these types of voter suppression.
But we have to be realistic about what’s happening in our country right now: This is a coordinated attack on voting rights. That means we need everyone speaking out against these undemocratic attacks, because there is power in our numbers.
