The fences that encircled the Capitol for months after the January 6th insurrection are going back up again as Washington DC prepares for a weekend rally — funded and organized by former Trump operatives — in support of the seditionists who attacked the US Capitol to try and block the certification of our election results.
America is facing a growing internal threat to the health of our democracy in the form of violent political insurrection — and we need to take it seriously.
Last weekend in his remarks commemorating those we lost on 9/11, former President George W. Bush made a point of highlighting the threats posed by domestic terrorists to our democracy. He didn't specify which groups he was talking about, but it’s not difficult to fill in the blanks.
The Big Lie that drove the rioters on January 6th was fueled by Donald Trump and his allies. And — until elected Republican leaders stop referring to the insurrectionists that day as “patriots” and “political prisoners” and start calling for accountability — they too are directly complicit in any violence that results from stoking this destructive lie.
The Big Lie is also being used as an excuse by Republican-controlled state legislatures across our country to enact undemocratic voting restrictions that threaten the legitimacy of our electoral process — in a brazen scheme to deny the will of the people.
The only way we can slay the Big Lie is by strengthening our democracy and empowering every single American to engage, vote, and get involved in the struggle to build a brighter future for every American. That’s what my Democratic colleagues and I are laser-focused on right now — passing our historic Build Back Better agenda, the Freedom to Vote Act , and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act .
Every one of us has an important role to play in standing up for and advancing the fundamental values that are core to our democracy.
Thank you for being a partner in this mission.
Onwards,
Chris
