Co-Sponsored Legislation: This week, I lent my support and commitment to the following bills:

  • H.R. 5230                                                                                                                  This bill, the 9/11 Memorial and Museum Act would provide a one-time grant to cover operational, security, and maintenance expenses for the National September 11 Memorial and Museum at the World Trade Center. This appropriation would ensure that the Museum has the necessary finds to commemorate the events of September 11th and properly honor the victims. I am proud to support this legislation to ensure that we live up to the promises and expectations of the phrase “never forget.”
  • H.R. 5227                                                                                                                  The LIFT the BAR Act of 2021 would remove several barriers to federal public benefits that disproportionately impact immigrants. For example, the LIFT the BAR Act eliminates the current five-year waiting period for access to Medicaid, the Children’s Health Insurance Program, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistant, and other crucial services. The need to eliminate these barriers to health care and other programs has only been further highlighted by the COVID-19 pandemic and coinciding economic crisis that impacts vulnerable populations that are significantly more likely to be uninsured and cut out from federal assistance.

Clarke and Senator Baldwin Call for Investments in the Palliative Care and Hospice Workforce

Palliative care and hospice care focus on relieving and preventing patients’ suffering and improving their quality of life. This interprofessional team-based approach focuses on the patients’ needs, explains treatment options and gives patients and their families a voice in realizing their treatment goals, and serves as a critical component of high quality, coordinated, person-centered care. Unfortunately, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the need for quality palliative and hospice care has only grown more pronounced. Hospitals have treated thousands of seriously-ill patients under extremely stressful circumstances, and patients and their families have faced incredibly difficult decisions, often without the necessary guidance or expertise of a palliative care team. Now is the time to address the needs of patients facing serious illness and their families. To ensure access to palliative and hospice care for those who need it, we must support an interprofessional, team-based approach to care, and make the needed investments in the palliative care and hospice workforce.
