John You sent me to Congress to be a watchdog for the taxpayers and the American people, and to FIGHT the Democrats' radical agenda. This week in Congress, thanks to my committee assignment on the House Judiciary Committee, I got to do exactly that, on the front lines of the Democrats' massive $3.5 trillion Pelosi-Bernie-Biden "infrastructure" runaway-spending bill. As you know, their radical spending bill is about much, much more than "infrastructure." At the Judiciary Committee, I offered three specific amendments to the Democrats' bill: 1. Forcing the State Department to repay the outrageous fees costs they charged U.S. citizens fleeing Afghanistan Last month, the State Department announced that American citizens seeking evacuation flights from Afghanistan could have to pay $2,000 or more per person! That's unacceptable, and it was a low point of a dark chapter in American history. The amendment would ban Citizenship and Immigration Services from receiving its funding under this bill until the State Department certifies no U.S. citizens had to pay for a repatriation flight. 2. Banning funding for soft-on-crime District Attorneys Violent felons in liberal cities aren't being prosecuted. Thanks to lenient District Attorneys, prosecutors dropped charges in 16.9 percent of over 38,000 felony cases in 2020, more than double the rate of dropped charges from 2016 to 2019. Where Democrats can’t fully defund the police, they simply stop punishing criminals. My amendment would restrict the Attorney General from awarding a competitive grant or contract to a local government that has a policy against prosecuting any violent offense that affects the health, safety, or economy of the community. 3. Denying lawful permanent resident status for illegal aliens who commit sexual offenses: It should come as no surprise that the liberals are trying to tuck amnesty for millions of illegal immigrants into this bill. My amendment would prevent individuals who have been convicted of sexual offenses from receiving lawful permanent resident status. Every 68 seconds an American is sexually assaulted; and every nine minutes that victim is a child. Just as horrifying is the fact that less than 3 percent of perpetrators end up in prison. Preventing the worst of the worst from getting favorable immigration status is the least we can do. Serving as your congressman is the honor of a lifetime, and I want to thank you for entrusting me with your support. I will continue to update you on what I'm doing in Congress to EARN that trust, every day. Thanks, -Congressman Scott Fitzgerald |
