When Democrats betray their voters to cozy up to Big Pharma, those voters deserve to know. So when Rep. Kathleen Rice teamed up with Republicans to block President Biden’s plan to lower prescription drug prices, we immediately got our billboard truck on the road. And the national media is taking notice. The Hill’s Peter Sullivan tweeted:

Rep. Rice voted for this plan in 2019, as did Reps. Scott Peters and Kurt Schrader. Their betrayal is a direct result of Big Pharma’s lobbying efforts. These are safe Democratic seats. Their voters expect them to keep their promises, not sell them out for Pharma cash.

Voters delivered Democrats control of the House, Senate, and White House, and Democrats ran on a promise to lower prescription drug prices.

But yesterday, 3 Democrats on the House Energy & Commerce Committee joined up with Republicans to block a plan to allow Medicare to negotiate prices of prescription drugs in the same way that the Veterans Affairs health care system does. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office says that the prohibition on negotiating will allow Big Pharma to overcharge American taxpayers by $700 billion over the next decade.

These 3 Democrats each represent districts where Medicare drug price negotiation polls at 90%+!¹ If they’re betraying their voters like this, their voters need to know about it! So we’re rolling out the billboard trucks.

We’re starting in Rep. Kathleen Rice’s New York district. Can you chip in $7 to keep our Billboard Truck on the road?

We’re starting with Rep. Rice because, unlike her colleagues Reps. Scott Peters (D-CA) and Kurt Schrader (D-OR), she has “only” accepted $84,259 in contributions from the Pharmaceutical and health industry, unlike the $860,465 and $614,830 Peters and Schrader have received, respectively.² Her 2020 campaign ran TV ads touting her willingness to stand up to Pharmaceutical Corporations. If she’s breaking that promise, her voters deserve to know!

This fight isn’t over. Though Rice, Peters and Schrader defeated drug pricing negotiation in their committee, another House Committee can restore it. It will then go to the floor of the whole House, where these three could either stand up to their Big Pharma paymasters or defeat the whole Build Back Better Act. We need to keep up the pressure and make sure that they fight for their constituents, not their corporate donors!
