Why I?m still wearing my face covering

please wear a mask graphic

We?ve all worked so hard to tackle Covid over the last 18 months ? we?ve all locked down, followed the restrictions and now we are all in the process of getting vaccinated. Nottingham currently has a low rate of Covid-19 ? and that?s thanks to the hard work of local people.

I know we?ve all enjoyed the freedoms that summer brought, but we must not lose sight of the fact that the virus is still present in our city: people are still getting sick and being admitted to hospital and intensive care. Sadly, people are still dying from Covid. That?s why, even though restrictions were eased in July, we?ve continued to ask people in Nottingham to keep thinking about what they can do to stay safe. That means washing hands, meeting others in the fresh air where possible and testing regularly for the virus. We want everyone to get vaccinated and we are supporting the NHS rollout to young people aged 12-15. We?re asking people to wear face masks in busy indoor areas where lots of people are mixing. This could be when walking around a pub or restaurant, going to the theatre or cinema ? or on buses and trams in the city. Face coverings help to protect each other from the virus ? and I want everyone in our city to be safe. That?s why I?m still wearing my face covering? and I?d urge you to do the same.

Urgent call for Prime Minister to retain ?lifeline? benefit payment

Nottingham Skyline

We?ve sent a letter today to Downing Street calling on the Government to overturn its decision to scrap the weekly ?20 Universal Credit uplift.

This has been a lifeline to so many families in Nottingham during the pandemic and removing it creates a real risk of pushing them into serious poverty. We?ve seen an upsurge in the use of food banks over the past 18 months so it is clear that many people are seriously struggling, including those in low-paid and unstable work, low incomes and people claiming benefit for the first time due to the impact of Covid ? with 7,500 extra claimants in the city over the past year and more than 28,000 Nottingham households now on Universal Credit.

It's imperative that the Government listens to these concerns and urgently reverses this decision. Find out more [ [link removed] ]

Opening new walkway signals next phase of progress at Broad Marsh

Walkway at Broadmarsh

It?s pleasing to have opened a new walkway through the former Broad Marsh shopping centre site earlier this week ? not just because it improves the walkway itself and keeps the important pedestrian link open between the city centre and Nottingham Station, but because it allows demolition of the western end the shopping centre to get fully underway. I?m also pleased that we have worked with The Nottingham Project to introduce more local artwork to the upgraded walkway, to brighten up the area while works continue.

We have made great strides to move things forward in the relatively short time since we took over responsibility for the site from intu?s administrators. And we continue to make excellent progress on the areas around the new Broad Marsh car park, bus station and library building. The area in front of the new college is unrecognisable from a few years ago and our work will continue onto Middle Hill through to next spring. Similarly the area leading to the new walkway on Carrington Street is being turned into a pleasant paved area with trees, planting and stepped seating and resurfacing along Canal Street includes a new cycle lane linking up the cycle routes at the Island Quarter and on Castle Boulevard.

I think that people returning to the city centre will be really impressed with the way that all this changes the look and feel of the area, from a traffic-dominated part of the city to somewhere that people will be inclined to linger and enjoy their surroundings.

Meet the officer taking on burglars in Nottingham

Julian Best

Our new Burglary Reduction Officer has started his vital work to try to reduce burglary in certain neighbourhoods in the city.

Residents living in parts of Arboretum and Lenton Triangle consistently identify burglary as their greatest crime concern in annual crime and antisocial behaviour surveys in the city. This new role will go a long way to tackling this issue and helping residents to feel safer in their homes.

Julian Best is the new Burglary Reduction Officer and will work with the local community undertaking risk assessments of properties at risk of burglary, organising improvements to security, which could include new door locks, video doorbells, window alarms, security lighting and/or CCTV.

I have no doubt that Julian will be a real asset to the Safer Streets project and his work will make a real difference to residents in these neighbourhoods.
