1. Gov. Sununu (R-NH) Budget Director Joins ClearPath

ClearPath announced Matthew Mailloux

[link removed]

, former State Budget Director for the Office of Governor Christopher T. Sununu (R-NH), has joined as a Policy Analyst.

Mailloux will work across our clean energy technology portfolio, with a focus on economics, finance, and power markets.

Rich’s take:

“We are incredibly excited for Matthew to join our team, and bring tremendous state-level expertise to our efforts to accelerate solutions on clean energy and industrial innovation.”

“Matthew knows how to implement clean energy technology into an energy system that is good for consumers.”

2. Everything’s bigger in Texas

...including carbon capture. Eleven companies

[link removed]

are interested in supporting the large-scale deployment of carbon capture and storage technology in Houston.

With a plan to address industrial emissions, the companies could capture and store up to 50 million metric tons of CO2 per year by 2030 and about 100 million metric tons by 2040.

The players: Calpine ... Chevron ... Dow ... ExxonMobil ... INEOS ... Linde ... LyondellBasell ... Marathon Petroleum ... NRG Energy ... Phillips 66 and Valero.

What’s clear: Wide-scale deployment of CCS in the Houston area will not only reduce emissions, but will also generate tens of thousands of new jobs. A true win-win.

3. Clean energy saved in Illinois!

Two nuclear energy plants

[link removed]

, Byron and Dresden, will be refueled following action taken by the state legislature to enact a comprehensive energy bill.

The details:

This move will preserve about 4000 MW of electricity between the four reactors (two reactors at each site).

What’s clear: This legislation will strengthen Illinois’ clean energy leadership, preserve tens of thousands of jobs, and continue to play a major role in the clean energy future.

Plug in: Emissions reductions are likely to flatline unless clean energy innovations and net-zero commitments pick up steam, according to a recent power-sector trends report, A Clear Path to a Clean Energy Future

[link removed]

which says maintaining existing nuclear reactors is a cheap way to reach emission reduction goals.

4. Preventing Taliban-controlled minerals, China-controlled supply chains

Top House Natural Resources Committee Republicans are pushing the Biden Administration to probe

the Taliban’s access to critical minerals and China’s influence in supply chains.

What’s clear: Afghanistan has abundant resources needed for clean energy technology and China has their eyes on them.

Reps. Bruce Westerman (R-AR), Paul Gosar (R-AZ) and Pete Stauber (R-MN) are leading the probe.

Rep. David McKinley (R-WV) also had legislation that would prevent funds from being used to purchase critical minerals from the Taliban or China.

Plug in: Rich Powell unpacks this in his latest op-ed

in the Washington Examiner.

5. CCUS 101

As industry, investor, and policymaker momentum for CCUS continues to pick up, ClearPath partnered with The Conservation Coalition's Market Environmentalism Academy to help educate the next generation of clean energy leaders.
