In case you missed it, the Texas legislature is in the spotlight yet again for violating people's civil liberties – this time for a dangerous voter suppression law known as SB1.

Before we get into it, make no mistake that our lawyers are already on top of this urgent issue: The ACLU, ACLU of Texas, and multiple other civil rights organizations filed a lawsuit to challenge this unconstitutional, anti-democratic piece of legislation.

Here's what you should know:

• The SB1 law violates the Voting Rights Act, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Civil Rights Act, and the U.S. Constitution.
• This law makes voting harder for all Texans – but it especially threatens to harm communities of color and Texans with disabilities the most.
• In fact, the new law makes it drastically more difficult for many people to vote, especially those who are more comfortable with languages other than English, those with disabilities, and those who have no option but to vote by mail. Plus, it unlawfully targets the organizations that represent, assist, and support these voters.
• Recent non-partisan polling shows most voters, regardless of political party, believe that all Texans should have equal access to the ballot box. That's why the anti-voter law is opposed by diverse groups of people across the state, from business executives, faith leaders, community organizers, local elected officials, and countless everyday Texans.

The ACLU will not stop fighting until discriminatory voter suppression efforts like those in Texas are stopped, ACLU Supporter – especially as so many states nationwide begin redistricting processes that could impact voting power for decades.

This is no doubt an urgent time for all our civil liberties across the country. But we want you to know it's because of community members like you that we're able to push back on every front.
