Friend,

Here's a sentence said by the President of the United States on Monday:

_"I don't think you people, with this phony Emoluments Clause -- and by the way, I would say that its cost anywhere from $2 billion to $5 billion to be president."_

The Emoluments Clause is anything but phony -- its in the Constitution. It prohibits elected federal officials from receiving gifts or contributions from foreign governments. For example: Hosting G-7 leaders and their staff at a private resort owned by the president of the United States.

The Emoluments Clause is an important part of the Constitution because it holds our elected officials accountable and prevents corruption, and I'm not sure who "you people" are in that statement, but I'm going to guess Donald Trump meant the American people. _You and me._

We have to fight back: Add your name if you support keeping foreign influence away from the White House. ( [link removed]

This all started because President Trump insisted on using his private resort -- Doral -- near Miami to host next years G-7 summit. He insisted he would not have profited off hosting world leaders, scores of journalists, and other staff at his family's property.

But we know that several foreign countries have hosted events and national holiday celebrations at the Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C. since he took office -- in fact, the Saudi government spent $270,000 at the hotel between October 2016 and March 2017 alone.

This is on top of his more than 100 trips as president to properties he owns, which has brought those businesses at least $1.6 million in revenue -- but as the Washington Post reported last year, its probably even more than that.

The Constitution mandates that our federally elected officials not profit off foreign governments -- and hosting the journalists, staff, and leaders of six huge foreign governments would have meant a huge profit for Donald Trump and his family.

We need to hold President Trump accountable -- even though he has backed off the idea of hosting the G-7 summit at his Doral resort, he clearly has no regard for the Constitutions Emoluments Clause mandates. Add your name to remind him of his oath to this country and not to profit off foreign governments at his private resorts.

Sincerely,

Chuck Schumer
