To Be The Church

Jesus famously said:

Then pay to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s; and to God the things that are God’s.

I have always understood that to mean, at least in part, that the church is to be the church regardless of the political circumstances.  The early church, in the Roman Empire, was composed primarily of slaves.  The church has continued through empires, kingdoms, communist states and democracies.  The church makes the world better not by making better, or even different, government, but by making better people that then make better government.
