John: yesterday,
the first draft of redistricting maps in New York were released — and to
be honest with you, we’re a bit concerned.

Here’s how things are now:

The slight upward shift in boundaries may not seem like much, but here’s
exactly what it means for Jamaal’s district:

* The Bronx — including the area that included the middle school Jamaal
taught at for years — will be all but removed from his district.
* Democratic voters in general are expected to be significantly more
moderate than they are in Jamaal’s current district.
* The proposed new district’s population will be about one-third more
Republican and one-third less Black than Jamaal’s current district.

All in all, John:
the proposed map gives Jamaal a more right-leaning and less diverse
electorate. This means that Jamaal could face potential, more moderate
challengers to his seat, and make securing re-election for Jamaal — and
keeping him in Congress — more challenging and expensive than we
anticipated.

The things Jamaal has been able to accomplish for our movement and for our
district in just eight months is nothing short of incredible. But his work
is just getting started, so we need to make sure that we have all the
tools we need to keep him in Washington for years to come.

What’s more, New York will lose a House seat in redistricting — and come
2022, Democrats will be scrambling to hang onto our super-narrow majority.
