Celebrating Latinx Heritage Month “Our goal is to foster a united front, uplift legislation, and mobilize Latinxs to be decision-makers of our democracy.”
As we kick off Latinx Heritage Month, we celebrate Tides Advocacy partner, Poder Latinx, a powerful group that educates, empowers, and organizes Latinx communities to mobilize efforts focused on issues like voting rights, immigration, paid leave, and environmental justice. Poder Latinx imagines a world where Latinx communities are recognized as an important voice in democracy. Yadira “Yadi” Sanchez, Co-Executive Director of Poder Latinx, spoke with Andrea Granda of Tides Advocacy about the lucha para nuestra gente (the fight for our people) in this month’s Daring Change. Hear from Yadi about where Poder Latinx is headed in 2022 and what it will take to move their work forward.

Building Power in the Latinx Community “Communities can be their own designers, can be their own planners, and create something beautiful.”
PODER (People Organizing to Demand Environmental and Economic Rights), demonstrates the power of what a community can get done together. Organizing with Latinx immigrant families and youth across San Francisco since 1991, PODER has made a big impact on the community: the organization spurred a $5.2 million project that transformed a parking lot into a vibrant meeting ground, and turned a vacant landscape in San Francisco's Mission neighborhood into the now heavily-used and celebrated In Chan Kaajal Park.

Social Ventures Creating Equity in Education “The National Center for Earth and Space Science Education (NCESSE) aims to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers by communicating science as a human endeavor.”
It's back-to-school season and educators, parents, and students continue to grapple with the uncertainties of the unrelenting pandemic. On top of that, many are confronting entrenched inequities in the education system that continue to disproportionately impact BIPOC and immigrant communities. From supporting our most vulnerable student populations with the tools they need to succeed, to inspiring the next generation of scientists, these six organizations are leading the charge in innovative education.

Food Justice During the Pandemic "I knew that the pandemic was something that was going to shatter families in so many ways, and I knew we had to change the way we work."
In 2020, nearly 14 million American households did not know where their next meal would come from. National Farm to School Network brings local food sourcing, school gardens, and agricultural education into schools, specifically to those facing food insecurity. Last year, NFSN ensured more children had access to free, nutritious food options both at school and at home. The Network also hosted a virtual Movement Meeting centered on shifting power to create racially-just food systems.

Searching for Peace 20 Years After 9/11 “All eyes are now on Afghanistan, but Peaceful Tomorrows hasn’t looked away since that initial trip.”
Working to break the cycle of violence engendered by war and terrorism, four family members who lost loved ones in the 9/11 attacks traveled to Afghanistan to turn their grief into action for peace by promoting dialogues on alternatives to war, calling attention to threats on civil liberties, and by sharing their common experience. This core group were among the founding members of September 11th Families for Peaceful Tomorrows, a project of the Tides Center. As the world anxiously watches withdrawal of the U.S. military and the Taliban takeover, Peaceful Tomorrows continues to advocate for non-violent options to create a safer, more peaceful world.
