Follow Us on Social President's Message Childhood obesity affects about 1 in 5 American children. September is National Childhood Obesity Awareness Month, and school nurses can help educate children how to reach a healthy weight. Last week, I mentioned the importance of sleep in our lives, and children are no exception. According to the CDC, good sleep is critical to prevent type 2 diabetes, obesity, injuries, poor mental health, and problems with attention and behavior. Children 6-12 years old need 9-12 hours of uninterrupted sleep a night and those ages 13-18 need 8-10 hours of sleep. New CDC Toolkit for Testing in Schools CDC has updated guidance and resources in this toolkit, including materials that school nurses can use to teach families, students, and staff about school testing programs and encourage participation. Many of these materials are customizable and can be adapted according to the school’s needs. New CDC COVID-19 Vaccine Booster Shot The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced a plan to begin offering COVID-19 vaccine booster shots this fall. The CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices will make further recommendations for the public, including school staff, soon. Immunocompromised adults are already recommended to receive a booster. Learn more. Schools Brace for Pandemic-Fueled Mental Health Needs Students are returning to in-person learning this year with increased rates of depression, anxiety, and other mental health challenges. School nurses can learn more by listening to the Tradeoffs Podcast featuring Principal Kyron Harvell from Lansing, Michigan, and Sharon Hoover, Co-Director of the National Center for School Mental Health. NEW COVID-19 Resources CDC has a new data tracker for pediatric cases to monitor cases of COVID-19 and Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome (MIS-C). Care Coordination for Youth & Young Adults with Spina Bifida in Health Care Transition As the next school year begins, there needs to be a continued focus on keeping students safe and in school. New CDC Guidance for K-12 Schools includes strategies to reduce the spread on COVID-19 in schools and maintain safe operations. There is also an updated science brief about the transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in schools. NASN's COVID-19 Interactive Tools Can I Send My Student to School: Designed for school nurses to share with families, this interactive tool is based on CDC COVID-19 guidance and designed to guide families through assessing when their child should stay home from school. How to Manage Difficult Conversations: A quick micro-burst of learning, this interactive module teaches school nurses a simple formula to use to respond effectively to challenging conversations.
