Dear John,
One of the issues I’ve heard about most from folks across North Texas is the rising cost of prescription drugs. No family should have to choose between paying for life-saving medication and paying for groceries and bills. Last year, I invited Shane, a North Texan from Garland, to the State of the Union after she shared her story about the high cost she has to pay for the insulin that keeps her healthy and alive. One in four Americans with diabetes are forced to ration their insulin because of high costs, and that is unacceptable.
This pandemic has made it obvious— Congress needs to take action.
That’s why I’ve been working in Congress to pass legislation that would allow Medicare to negotiate lower prices across the board. This bill, the Lower Drug Costs Now Act, would reduce the price of the costliest drugs by an average of 55 percent, according to the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office.
Congress is considering including legislation in an upcoming legislative package and I want to hear from you. Should Congress take steps to lower prescription drug costs?

My legislation to lower drug costs would:
- End the ban on Medicare negotiating directly with the drug companies, while ensuring seniors will never lose access to the prescriptions they need.
- Make the lower drug prices negotiated by Medicare available to all Americans, including those with private insurance, not just Medicare enrollees.
- Stop drug companies price-gouging Americans while charging other countries less for the same drugs, limiting the maximum price for any negotiated drug to be in line with the average price in countries like ours, where drug companies charge less for the same drugs.
The health and well-being of North Texans is my number one priority and as Congress considers legislation to lower costs, I will continue to work with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to pass legislation that provides real relief for the American people.
As always, my team and I are always here to answer your questions and help with any issues you have with federal agencies. If you would like to contact me, please send an email, or call my office at 972-972-7949.
Sincerely,
Colin Allred Member of Congress
