The future of Bernie’s $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill is in jeopardy, John, because of Joe Manchin and other corporate Democrats who are using critical investments in climate, education, immigration, and Medicare expansion, as bargaining chips.
Let’s be clear: $3.5 trillion was already a hard-fought compromise, and we can’t afford to take away policies that would directly benefit working families. We are talking about investments in issues that affect Americans day-to-day: healthcare, education, housing, home care, climate, and so much more. But our progressive priorities are being held hostage by Senator Manchin, who has made clear that he is representing corporate interests in Washington — not West Virginians.
Just this week, Manchin made an ugly, classist comment saying there should be work or educational requirements in order to alleviate child poverty. Unbelievable.
Let’s be clear: the $3.5 trillion reconciliation bill is only a start. But if corporate Democrats are obstructing this spending bill — imagine the future of Medicare for All or a Green New Deal.
We desperately need to elect more members of Congress who won’t be afraid to make big and bold investments on behalf of the American people. Members of Congress who won’t be afraid of raising taxes on the ultra-wealthy or corporations in order to ensure all Americans have the resources they need to survive.
In solidarity,
Justice Democrats
