As one of the only working single moms in Congress, the fight for
affordable child care is close to my heart.

Too often, parents—especially women—are forced out of the workforce due to
the high, unattainable prices of child care. And for many working
families, the cost of child care is more than the paycheck they’d be
bringing home.

At the same time, it means millions of workers aren’t able to join, or
rejoin, the workforce—hurting small and large businesses alike who are
facing a worker shortage.

This isn’t how it should be,
John. It’s bad for the economy and it’s bad for
families.

If we want our country to thrive, we need to support the working families
that are helping our communities thrive. Having to choose between
providing for your family or accessing quality care for your children
should not be a shared American experience.

That’s why I’m working hard every day to lead the fight for universal
child care in every corner of our country. And
John, we’re winning.

Just last week, my allies in the House and I were able to remove
unnecessary means testing from the child care subsidy in our family
investment plan. This means no family will have to pay more than 7% of
their annual income towards child care—a huge win for working families
everywhere.
