Friend,
It’s Bi+ Awareness Week, and we can hardly contain our excitement about this news: Emmy-nominated animator, writer, singer-songwriter, and bisexual and nonbinary ICON (!!!) Rebecca Sugar is hosting a virtual concert this Sunday to help raise money for The Trevor Project!
You might know Rebecca as the creator of Cartoon Network’s hit TV show “Steven Universe” and writer for “Adventure Time.” We know them as a Trevor board member and an incredible advocate and inspiration to LGBTQ young people everywhere.
Did you know bi+ people make up 75% of young people* who identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual? While all LGBTQ young people are at a higher risk of experiencing negative mental health outcomes than their straight and cisgender peers, bisexual youth statistically face even more challenges than lesbian and gay youth. According to The Trevor Project’s research:
- Almost half of bisexual youth seriously considered suicide in the past year.
- More than one in three bisexual youth reported being bullied at school.
With biphobia and bisexual erasure still prevalent in today’s society, the LGBTQ representation that Rebecca has brought to popular culture is essential in creating a more understanding and affirming world for bi+ youth.
