Dear AFGE Activist,
Federal retirees under the Civil Service Retirement System, and some under the Federal Employees Retirement System have found themselves and their spouses receiving reduced Social Security benefits because of two limitations – the Government Pension Offset (GPO) and the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP).
If you had earnings outside of federal employment that you paid into Social Security for, or if your surviving spouse has their own government pension, Social Security benefits are disproportionately reduced, sometimes even eliminated. The Social Security Fairness Act of 2021 (H.R. 82/S. 1302) would fully repeal GPO and WEP.
