With recent changing migration trends in Latin America, most notably the significant displacement from Venezuela and Central America to countries elsewhere in the region, local governments in Latin America and the Caribbean are grappling with a new set of policy questions surrounding immigrant integration.
National governments in the region have instituted a number of policies to integrate those fleeing crisis into the labor market and the education system, treating those who might normally arrive as refugees as integral parts of their host communities. But how are these national policy agendas translating at the local level as municipalities handle an unprecedented influx of arrivals? What policies are cities pursuing regarding the integration of migrants into the labor market and education, health-care, housing, and social services systems? What can be learned from their recent efforts to welcome migrants into local neighborhoods?
In the first of a series of webcasts looking at how Latin American and Caribbean cities are approaching these issues, this conversation with leaders from mid-sized cities will examine how they have quickly adapted to welcome immigrants to ensure that both newcomers and host communities benefit. Speakers will offer reflections on their experiences in local migration management, securing financial resources, coordination with national and state governments, and developing and implementing local integration policies.
The event will be in Spanish and interpretation to English will be provided.
