On the evening of Constitution Day, the National Constitution Center will present a special Constitution Day America’s Town Hall program exploring how to understand the legacy of the American Revolution and the founders in the 21st century. Best-selling historian Gordon Wood will be joined at the National Constitution Center in person by fellow historian Edward Larson and virtually by author Emily Pears and scholar Lucas Morel to discuss Wood’s newest book Power and Liberty: Constitutionalism in the American Revolution. Jeffrey Rosen, president and CEO of the National Constitution Center, moderates.

Jones, Hasan Kwame Jeffries, and Robert George; School District of Philadelphia’s Dr. William R. Gloria Browne-Marshall, professor of constitutional law at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Rafael Mangual, senior fellow and head of research for the Policing and Public Safety Initiative at the Manhattan Institute, and others join moderator Jeffrey Rosen, president and CEO of the National Constitution Center, to discuss what the doctrine is and whether it needs to be reformed.

Join historians Allen Guelzo of Princeton University, Sophia Rosenfeld of the University of Pennsylvania, and political philosopher Steven Smith of Yale University for a timely discussion exploring Smith’s newest book, Reclaiming Patriotism in an Age of Extremes. The conversation will explore some of the key episodes of patriotism and dissent throughout American history—from the Revolution through Founding and the Civil War to today—and highlight what patriotism has meant over time, and why deliberation is key to its future.
