This is the most dangerous moment for democracy in our lifetime.
The U.S. president is openly using his office to enrich himself and his
family. He is illegally seeking the help of foreign governments to
attack his political opponents. He is stonewalling oversight from
Congress and packing the courts with political cronies—while Republicans
in Congress back him all the way.
In times like this, it's up to the people to hold power to account. But
the news media is failing.
Right-wing news outlets like Fox News and Sinclair actively mislead
viewers to protect the president. Too many news organizations remain
paralyzed by a misguided concept of "balance" that requires every hour
of factual reporting to be balanced by an hour of Trumpian lies.
Coverage of the Democratic presidential primary remains obsessed with
polling and the political horse race while ignoring key context and
pivotal issues. And as wealthy owners of the corporate media demand ever
greater profits, outlets consolidate and newsrooms shrink—or get
shuttered.
Make no mistake: Our democracy is at risk. The corporate media is
falling down on the job at a time when we can least afford it. But
Common Dreams is different.
We have no corporate advertisers, no private equity investors demanding
greater returns or profit-boosting layoffs. We are only accountable to
you, our readers—and it is only because of you that we exist.
