American Families Plan Undermines Families, Self-Fulfillment <[link removed]> – In higher education, the plan is a massive liberal wish list. It includes items like $109 billion for “free” community college, when more than half of students in community colleges already do not pay any part of their tuition or fees under existing federal aid. Indeed, there are few aspects of family life that this plan doesn’t try to replace with government services. The plan would also further expand free school meals to non-poor students, would send billions to K-12 schools for teacher training, and would create a massive federal paid family leave program. These programs may address some basic, material needs, but they do not address – and even undermine – the higher-order needs that cannot be met by
the state; those that can only be provided in any meaningful way by families and civil society. Heritage experts: Lindsey Burke <[link removed]> and Robert Rector <[link removed]>
‘The Breakdown Is Coming’: Heritage Homeland Security Team Blasts August Border Apprehension Numbers <[link removed]> – Much as the media has
quickly moved on from the Biden administration’s disastrous handling of Afghanistan, even more so have they turned a blind eye to the Biden border crisis. Last month, we saw more than 212,000 apprehensions at the border. The last time apprehensions were that high, fears over Y2K weren’t even on the horizon. The Biden administration’s open-borders policies have encouraged, incentivized, and facilitated mass illegal immigration, and the consequences have been predictable: more than 100,000 apprehensions per month in every full month President Biden has been in
office. The numbers from August show that trend is nowhere close to changing. It’s time for Congress to do its job and actually do something to hold this administration accountable for its dereliction of duty. Heritage expert: Lora Ries <[link removed]>
Smear Campaign Against Larry Elder Reveals Fraud by Woke Media <[link removed]> – The so-called Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion movement is
all about ending “white privilege” unless there is a “D” next to the name on the ballot. As far as political campaigns, maybe none of this matters much. Elder, who claimed 47% of the vote and led the 46 candidates to replace Newsom, went down in a political environment in which only a progressive Democrat can win statewide office no matter how badly he or she has failed. However, it does demonstrate just how much the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion mantras are really a mask for political
power. Even if you are a minority and what progressives see as part of a historically oppressed group, you almost certainly will be redefined as a “white supremacist” if you oppose their power in any way. All failures, malfeasance, and privilege will be excused away, as long as it’s useful for
“the cause.” Heritage expert: Jarrett Stepman <[link removed]>
Census Bureau falsely claims poverty fell overall in 2020 as result of massive stimulus checks and unemployment aid <[link removed]> – The Census report is an important reminder that Census puts
out inaccurate information on poverty. For example, the official measurement of poverty does not count as income major welfare programs, including food stamps, public housing, EITC, the refundable child credits and Medicaid. The other measure still misses at least half of this spending. We can’t talk about poverty unless there is an accurate count of resources being used. And lawmakers should not talk about expanding the welfare system without knowing how much the federal government currently spends on these programs. For example, government currently spends about $500 billion each year on cash, food, housing and medical care for families with children. That amount is sufficient to raise the income of every poor and low-income family to twice the poverty level, or $54,000 per year for a family of four. Heritage expert: Robert Rector <[link removed]>
Americans know more about the Kardashians than they do about our Constitution <[link removed]> – In modern America, more people know more about the Kardashians than they do about those who govern them or would seek to govern
them. Imagine going to the polls with only the faintest of ideas about the powers exercised by those we are voting for and the control they have over our lives. Ignorance and complacency foster a feeling of powerlessness. Over time, this can lead to acquiescence to an expanded role for government — and an undue reliance upon government — at the expense of our freedom and individual liberties. Widespread ignorance of how the Constitution helped establish “a more perfect Union” designed to “secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our
Posterity” is a dangerous development that must be corrected. Samuel Adams once wrote that our nation would be free and prosperous “[i]f virtue and knowledge are diffused among the people.” Heritage experts: John Malcolm <[link removed]> and Angela Sailor <[link removed]>
More Politicians Won't Follow Their Mask Mandates <[link removed]> – This tool is not about playing a political game of “Gotcha!” It is
about protecting and restoring confidence in our governing institutions — a confidence that has been especially shredded by many leaders’ response to the coronavirus pandemic. It’s not too much ask that these officials display the most basic sense of integrity. And it is only appropriate that we call them out when they stubbornly refuse to do so. Millions of Americans have heard the phrase “we’re all in this together” for months from corporate advertisers, friends on social media and, of course, government officials. If the behavior of our elected leaders is any indication, however, it would seem that many of them have chosen to live by another phrase: “YOU’RE all in this together.” Heritage experts: Joel Griffith <[link removed]> and John Cooper <[link removed]>
