Counting down: 35 Moments from 35 Years

Speaking out against confinement

We’re getting closer to our 35th-anniversary celebration! Join us Saturday, October 9, to see The Power of Sanctuary in action. We’re also celebrating some of our milestones from the past 35 years! This week: #16-20.

16. Farm Sanctuary backs key legislative efforts to reduce exploitation on factory farms. The list includes a lot of firsts: the first ban on gestation crates for pigs (Florida), the first ban on veal crates for calves (Arizona), and the first ban on battery cages for egg-laying hens (California).

17. You won’t find factory farming among Martha Stewart’s recommendations. In 2013, she joined our efforts to ban gestation crates for pigs in New Jersey.

18. HBO’s Bill Maher joined the same campaign against gestation crates. Meanwhile, actor Ryan Gosling spread our message to Canada.

19. Some of our youngest members make the biggest difference. Farm Sanctuary’s Youth Leadership Council connects students who campaign against factory farming, call for plant-based meal options in their communities, and more!

20. Opie calf had less than a 5% chance of survival and then lived for almost two decades at Sanctuary. The dairy industry rejected him because boys don’t make milk, but we believed in Opie—and Opie’s life inspired change.

The Power of Sanctuary
Celebrating 35 Years

Saturday, October 9, 2021
4:00 p.m. PT / 7:00 p.m. ET

The Sanctuary movement wasn't created by one person or one organization, but by the collective actions of compassionate individuals—by believers like you. You are the Power of Sanctuary.

On October 9, please join us for a virtual celebration—with special guests John Lewis, Dominick Thompson, Bob Weir, Paul Wesley, and others, as we reflect on 35 years of Sanctuary, plus the work involved in creating a more just and compassionate food system.

We’ll be honoring amazing changemakers: Brenda Sanders of Thrive Baltimore, Afro-Vegan Society, Vegan Soulfest, and Greener Kitchen and Maggie Baird of Support + Feed for their commitment to food justice and combating food insecurity. You’ll hear stories of survival, of hard-won victories, and more!
