I want to tell you about my mom, Gail.

She was a nurse for most of her life and was a tireless advocate for the people in her care. She taught me that dedicating yourself to serving others is the best way to leave a mark on this world. She's a big reason why I've spent so much of my life as an advocate for our community.

But my mom's story doesn't have a happy ending. After decades of taking care of patients my mom, Gail Fisher, lost her life because she could not afford her prescriptions -- too proud to tell our family she needed help. I miss her every single day.

Heartbreakingly, this story is not unique to my family.

40% of Americans can't afford their prescriptions. Take a moment to let that sink in -- that is 4 in 10 Americans who do not have access to the medications they need. My mom's story is the story of America -- a country that for far too long has put profits over people.

I'm telling you this story because politicians like Mike Garcia make decisions every day that have real implications for the American people.
