Judge sentences Charlottesville murderer to 419 years The neo-Nazi who killed anti-racist protester Heather Heyer during the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville nearly two years ago will likely spend the rest of his life in prison. A state judge this week sentenced James Alex Fields Jr., 22, to 419 years on a first-degree murder charge and nine counts of malicious wounding. The judge told a packed courtroom that Fields committed an act of terrorism when he rammed his car into counter-protesters during the “Unite the Rally” in August 2017.

SPLC sues Florida officials over law requiring police to act as ICE agents A new Florida law requiring local police to cooperate with federal immigration authorities will erode public safety for all citizens while increasing racial profiling and unjust deportations, the SPLC and its allies charged in a new federal lawsuit this week. “Racial and national origin minorities who are victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking will be deterred from accessing services for crime, placing them at greater risk and undermining public safety,” the lawsuit states.
