John,
We’ve got bad news, good news, and a way you can help create more good news.
First, the bad news: critical ethics provisions from the For the People Act, including requirements that presidents must divest their business interests and make their tax returns public, didn’t make it into the democracy reform bill the Senate will be considering soon. That’s incredibly disappointing.
But there’s some good news: the Freedom to Vote Act still contains many crucial provisions protecting access to voting, reducing the influence of money in politics and curbing partisan gerrymandering. These provisions are essential for a real democracy. It’s great that the Senate will consider the bill soon, and it’s urgent that Congress pass it as soon as possible.
And here’s how you can help make some more good news: by calling your senators. The Freedom to Vote Act could easily be blocked by the filibuster, just as the original For the People Act was a few months ago. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer said that he expects there to be a vote on the bill next week—so we need you to act now and help put pressure on the Senate to abolish the filibuster in order to pass the Freedom to Vote Act. Our democracy is on the line, and we can’t let the filibuster stand in the way. Call your senators at (202) 224-3121, and tell them: pass the Freedom to Vote Act and abolish the filibuster to do so. Our democracy can’t wait any longer.
Thank you,
Noah Bookbinder
